Amazon.com Product Description
The Plustek OpticFilm 7200 7200DPI Film Scanner is an outstanding solution for photographers who have a collection of 35mm film and wish to scan it for archiving or to digitally manipulate the images on a computer. The OpticFilm 7200 has the ability to scan at a high optical resolution of 7200 dpi and a 48-bit color depth for outstanding accuracy, preserving details such as the highlights and shadows of an image. The scanner is very easy to use: To scan, simply mount slides or a strip of film into the carrier and position it in the scanner. To use the quickscan button on the scanner's front, use the included QuickScan utility, which automatically scans according to the default settings you define. Scanning takes about 48 seconds for 3600 dpi scan, and it uses a single pass.

A small slide-sized square at the top of the scanner lights up when the scanner is on and can be used to view slides and negatives. The scanner uses a USB 2.0 connection for universal compatibility and quick data transfer. The OpticFilm 7200 comes with LaserSoft SilverFast SE 6, which offers controls for tweaking scanned images. A Photoshop plug-in and a TWAIN driver are part of the SilverFast software, enabling its use with other image manipulation programs. Also included is NewSoft Presto! ImageFolio 4.5 and PageManager 7.10. A carrying case is provided to hold the scanner and its accessories. The Plustek OpticFilm 7200 is compatible with Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Vista.

What's in the Box
OpticFilm 7200 scanner, padded carrying bag, mounted slide holder and filmstrip holder, USB cable, power adapter, quick guide, LaserSoft SilverFast CD-ROM, and setup/application CD-ROM.

1 out of 5 stars Does not work with Mac OS   November 8, 2008

Imagine my excitement when I finally find a film scanner (OpticFilm 7200) with such high reviews on the internet, after trying many solutions for digitizing a collection of 5,000+ slides... Only to find out this product cannot support Mac OS. Given the current upswing in market share of Mac products (MacBook and MacBook Pro hold position #7 and 8 on the Bestsellers in Computers & PC Hardware on Amazon as of this review), it is very unfortunate that Plustek has chosen to ignore such a sizable market of creative types whom would benefit from having access to their products...

Sad, sad indeed....

5 out of 5 stars Plustek OpticFilm 7200 7200DPI Film Scanner   October 18, 2008
This is a very easy to install, easy to use device that worked well for me. The quality of the scans is very good and most often I do not even use the highest quality setting. I transferred all of my family slides from the 60's and placed them on DVD. The software provided is decent. I prefer the "quick scan" feature when doing bulk transfer. You will have to make occassional adjustments to the autocrop if your slides have varying light conditions, but no sweat. I then discovered that this device is like a darkroom in a box - when I started transferring negatives. All in all a really good investment for me. Works well with my XP - x64 O/S.

1 out of 5 stars Incredibly Bad Customer Service   October 15, 2008

I purchased a Plustek OpticFilm 7200 from Amazon several months ago. It set up and worked fine for a week or so. Then the OpticFilm program indicated that the unit was not connected. It is properly connected and pressing buttons on the unit show reactions on the computer screen. But it will not work.

So, after a thorough reading of the manual, which does not help in this situation, I determined to call for help. Here's what I found:
"One of our representatives will be happy to assist you from Monday through Friday in office working hours as shown below:
Other Countries or Areas (including United States)
9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Taiwan Time"
Unbelievable that Amazon sells these products without ensuring that there is appropriate U.S. customer service in place.

So far so good .... I received the Optic Film 7200 with the Silverfast SE disk version. B4 you start, you can get a FREE Silverfast Upgrade to 6.6.0r2 and there is another one due out shortly. Contact Laser Soft Imaging in Sarasota FL @ 941-921-4815 from 3PM to 5PM for tech support from "Boris' -- he is very helpful. The Silverfast is terrific and once you get over the learning curve; you will be very satisfied. Forget the tutorial manual that Amazon links to the hardware; it does not address Silverfast SE technique -- only the higher versions e.g. Silverfast Ai. FYI -- Plustek is coming out with the NEW Plustek 7500i in 4Q2008. It will have the latest Silverfast software and better imaging at a respectful price.
